What was their role?
Once married, there was an incentive to have large families. A Yearly pension of 300 livres was granted to familiest with ten children, rising to 400 livres for 12 children and even more for larger families. The women didn't have an easy life in Nouvelle-France. Since they were paid a lot of money they had to work in addition to having 10 or more children and nurture them, these women were expected to help with the farming chores.
What was their main custom?
For the Les Filles du Roi their main custom was to marry, live on a farm and have 10+ children. It was a tradition in France that they would give your eldest daughter a large dowry to give her a better chance at marriage ( the more money you had the more likely to get proposal). Normally she would get furniture, land or other things inherited from the family. The next eldest daughter would also get a dowry from her parents, but it would be much less.
Where did they settle?
Les Filles du roi lived in New France meaning an area that is now Québec. Most settled mainly in Québec City while others traveled further up the river (Ex. La Pocatiére) After marriage, they spread out all across new France.
